INTERNATIONAL singing sensation Ed Sheeran has come on board as Patron of the Gorey charity 'Talk to Tom'.
The UK singer of smash hits such as 'Sing' and 'The A Team', who has strong links with Gorey, has agreed to become a patron of the suicide awareness and prevention charity, to help promote its work. He has already been photographed with the distinctive red Talk to Tom t-shirt and will wear it on occasion while on tour.
Talk to Tom Chairperson Ray Cullen said they're absolutely delighted to have Ed on board as a patron.
He explained that a relative of Ed's, who lives locally, invited donations for the charity for a recent birthday, and Ed's support for the charity grew from there.
He said that Ed's support will help raise awareness of the charity's work particularly with the younger target group. Ed's family are planning future fundraising events locally for Talk to Tom.
The signing is a huge boost for Talk to Tom which was founded just two years ago, following the untimely death of the much loved local young man
Tom O'Flaherty. His family set about organising a charity to help prevent the devastation and destruction left behind after suicide.
To date, some 150 people have used counselling services available through the charity, and more than 300 people have taken part in suicide prevention training. A panel of expert psychiatrists say that so far, 13 lives haven been saved.
A charity shop has opened on St. Michael's Road in Gorey, and the Talk to Tom Centre has opened on the Fort Road.
The phone number for Talk to Tom is 0818 30 30 61.
