Brave firefighters across County Wexford have completed Futures In Mind's life-saving QPR suicide prevention training, ensuring they are better equipped to support individuals in mental health crises.
The proactive measure comes as firefighters increasingly encounter such situations during their duties as first responders.
Teams from Gorey, Enniscorthy, Bunclody, New Ross, and Wexford Fire Stations have now completed the Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) training programme.
The training equips participants on how to recognise suicide warning signs, communicate effectively with those in distress, and refer them to appropriate support services.
A Growing Need for Mental Health Support
Mental health-related emergencies are becoming more frequent, with our hero firefighters often stepping in when ambulance services are stretched.
Recognising this challenge, Wexford County Council facilitated QPR training for its fire service, making Wexford one of the first counties in Ireland to implement such a comprehensive programme for its emergency responders.
Ray Cullen, CEO of Futures in Mind, highlighted the importance of the initiative: “Firefighters are encountering mental health emergencies more often than ever. By completing this training, Wexford Fire Service has taken an essential step towards saving lives," he said.
"Knowing the right words to say, and when to say them, can make all the difference,” added the charities volunteer CEO.
“While it supports those in crisis, it also helps protect the wellbeing of the responders themselves. Having a structured approach gives them confidence in these difficult situations.”
Life-Saving Impact Already Felt
The value of the training has already been demonstrated. Two firefighters from the recent cohort used their newly acquired skills to support individuals in crisis, potentially saving two lives.
Colm McGrath, Wexford’s Chief Assistant Fire Officer, expressed his pride in the firefighters’ commitment to the training: “Our teams often meet people on some of the worst days of their lives. This training gives them the tools to respond with confidence, professionalism, and compassion."
"It’s a significant step forward in ensuring we’re fully equipped to handle mental health emergencies,” added the fire chief.
A Collaborative Effort
The initiative was made possible by the partnership between Wexford County Council Fire Service and Futures in Mind.
Since introducing QPR training to Ireland nearly a decade ago, the charity has trained thousands of individuals, including most recently staff from ESB Networks and community groups across the country.
This latest effort by Wexford Fire Service sets a powerful example for other emergency response teams, showcasing the importance of addressing mental health challenges with urgency and compassion.
